A VISITORS GUIDE TO SOME OF THE SURF BREAKS DOWN SOUTH

Most of the breaks in the Yallingup-Margaret River area ('Down South') are powerful reef breaks, predominantly left-handers.

Some, like Rocky Point, Injidup Point and South Point work on a southwest or southerly wind, while the majority of spots between Cape Naturaliste and Margaret River prefer offshore winds (south-easterly through to north easterlies).

The following is a brief description of some of the better locations you may visit:

Rocky Point
Follow the road through Eagle Bay and either walk or paddle from the car park for 10 minutes. A forgiving left-hander, nice shape, short ride. Needs a moderate to heavy swell and southerly/south-west winds.

The Farm & Boneyards
Same swell and wind conditions as for Rocky. A right-hander, reef breaks with some beach break characteristics. Take the Bunkers Bay Road.

Lighthouse/Windmills
Beach breaks with some rocks. Pretty location, but only average waves. Works on a very' low swell when even Bears and Left-Handers are not doing it.

Three Bears
Top reef break in three sections. Papa, Mama and Baby Bears. Mamas is excellent quality. Fast, hollow, top wave for manoeuvres. Beautiful location but the 25 minute drive from Hemsley Rd is rough 4WD country. One of the best quality breaks. Works on a low to moderate swell.

Yallingup
"Main Break" is a very consistent wave that breaks left and right, and can hold a good wave in almost any swell and conditions, including onshore winds.
The left hander tends to be a full wave with long sloping walls and can result in very extended rides into the bay - a classic longboard wave. The right hander is a barrelling wave with some tight and exciting sections, and some nice overhead pits can be had on a good day."The Bubble" is to the left of Main Break, and just out of Cam range. It is a screaming tight left over the reef edge - Awesome to watch and ride.

Yallingup is surprisingly uncrowded for a large part of the year, except summer weekends and holiday periods. There is a great little sheltered beach and lagoon in front of the break. The easiest entry to the surf zone is a straight paddle out across the lagoon and over the reef, preferably between sets.

The main break is an excellent indicator for swell and wind conditions for all other breaks in the South West, and one look at Yall's will tell you what else is working. "Rabbit Hill" is further to the right and into the bay. Rabbits is a stretch of reef and beach that creates some excellent rights and lefts when conditions are right. Don't be fooled from the carpark, on a decent size day Rabbits can be pretty gnarly.

Smiths Beach
Two breaks - 'Smiths' is an average wave breaking over a reef, favoured by young board riders 'Supertubes' offers fast right hand tubes over a very shallow reef. Supertubes is found at the northern end of Smiths Beach.

Injidup Car Park
This break needs a moderate to low swell to produce a fantastic right hand tube. A very steep take-off forms over a sandy reef, with the same wave continuing over a sand bottom. The left is fairly tame. On a heavy swell, the paddle out through the white water is very demanding. Best on and easterly, but works with a southerly wind. Top wave on a big swell.

Injidup point
A 10 minute walk or paddle from the car park. Left-hander with one very fast section which breaks over a shallow reef ledge. Easy to end up among the rocks at the end of the ride.

Guillotine/Gallows
Road access is tiest suited to 4WD vehicles. Turn right off to Caves Rd onto Juniper Rd. Guillotine breaks fast over a shallow reef. Gallows has a right-hander and is favoured by board riders.

North Point
Works on a moderate swell with offshore winds (easterly). On a heavy swell, is an extremely challenging wave, a huge barrelling freight train right. Sensational take off with heavy wipe-out if you don't make it through the tube.

South Point
Also needs a big swell and southwest winds to produce long glassy lefts with a fast middle section. The rocks are a hazard. Very popular break.

Big Rock
Immediately south of South Point. Right-hander, works on a low swell.

Left Handers
A half mile walk from the car park. Produces a fast tubing left on a low to moderate swell. Very popular, especially with board riders.

Margaret River
There are two breaks straight out from the cliff top car park. 'Margarets' is situated immediately north, with Southside or 'Suicides' 100 metres away. Margarets will hold huge waves in a moderate to heavy swell and will produce rideable waves in all but a very low swell. The take off is in deep water, here it walls up into a very high peak with a fast, steep drop and heavy pitching lip. Further down the line, the powerful left hits the shallower reef ledge and can become very hollow and tricky to negotiate. The right is steep and a shorter ride. Southside generally does not compare with Margaret River.
